Australia’s prostate cancer foundation raises awareness and prompts men to take the right preventative steps.
Prostate, Prostate Checkup, Prostate Exam Add commentsAustralia’s prostate cancer foundation is an organisation that strives to educate men about preventative measures. The agency also funds research for both preventative measures and treatments of prostate-related conditions.
Established in the late 1990s, the prostate foundation strives to achieve several main goals. The multi-pronged focus of the agency includes :
- Taking steps to lower the impact of prostate cancer on the community and Australia’s families
- Representing men who have prostate cancer
- Assisting in research efforts to uncover causes, increase detection rates and improve diagnosis by providing funding
- Increasing the awareness of preventative and treatment measures
On the preventative front, the foundation takes a multi-pronged approach that recommends lifestyle, medical and dietary measures. To help prevent prostate health problems, the agency suggests men consume low-fat diets that contain nutrients such as vitamin E, selenium and lycopene. It also stresses the need for men to obtain annual examinations starting around the age of 40. Although checkups can be uncomfortable, they are vital in helping with early detection of prostate cancer. This can lead to early intervention and does save lives.
Similar to other prostate cancer organisations worldwide, the Australian foundation does emphasise diet and supplements. Although they might not always prevent prostate problems in all cases, clinical trials have shown their usefulness in reducing the odds.
As Australia faces some 12,000 new cases of prostate cancer each year, the foundation still has plenty of work to do. Through its promotion efforts and research, the agency strives to lower the numbers and eliminate the need for its own existence.
